Sustainability in Running

Here are some ideas to keep you on the roads and trails.

1- Cross train from time to time. Don’t be a one trick pony. While running is amazing and wonderful, it’s not the only workout there is. Keep things fresh by trying other forms of movement from time to time. When you’re not in a training cycle spend one day a week on a bike, in the pool or hiking on some trails.

2- Set fitness goals that don’t have anything to do with time goals. Look at the big picture and think of other things that you would like to get better at; running hills, fueling well for your long runs, being more present in your body while you race, or cheering others on.

3- Set goals for other areas of your life. Seek to achieve balance. You are more than just a body and a set of lungs. Nurture your mind and your spirit in addition to your body. Invest in relationships with your family members. Read books on subjects other than running. Many new runners go ALL IN and sacrifice other parts of their lives.

4- Don’t be afraid to take a break. If you’re feeling burned out don’t be afraid to take a two week break. It will likely be the reset that you need to feel recharged. As a high school coach I always have my athletes take a two week break between seasons. The mind and body need a reset from time to time.

5- Strength train. As we age we lose muscle mass unless we are actively combating that loss. Doing resistance training does so much more than build beautiful bodies. It allows us to complete our daily tasks without pain. It also helps us be runners for the long haul, treating muscle imbalances and strengthening our bodies.

6- Get a good physical therapist. When you are pushing your body there is always the risk for niggles, aches and pains. Addressing things before they become big problems will keep you healthy.

7- Find your tribe. Having a running partner (or several) has been a game changer for so many people. It makes it a lot easier to get going when you know encouragement and good conversation awaits you.

“They say a good love is one that sits you down, gives you a drink of water and pats you on top of the head. But I say a good love is one that casts you into the wind, sets you ablaze, makes you burn through the skies and ignite the night like a phoenix; the kind that cuts you loose like a wildfire and you can’t stop running simply because you keep on burning everything that you touch! I say that’s a good love; one that burns and flies, and you run with it!”
