Why I Run

Since our world has changed so drastically so quickly, many people are having to rethink why they run. Is it to prepare for a race? Is it for the social aspect? Is it to enjoy being outdoors? It usually doesn’t boil down to a single answer, but most runners count at least one of those reasons (race preparation, social interaction, enjoyment of the outdoors) among their motivations. When we can’t run in our usual social circles, many races have been postponed or cancelled, and we are prevented from enjoying our favorite parks or trails, it is time to dig deep and think about why we run. We may need to find new sources of motivation.

There are many benefits from being physically active. Two that are extra important right now and which may have previously ranked lower on the list of motivations for some of us are our physical health and our mental health. When we are physically active all of our body systems just work better. We are often able to sleep better. Being physically active releases hormones that help you feel good. This also is important for our mental health.

Many aspects of people’s lives have changed and much of it is out of our control. Deciding to continue to run and strength train is a choice that is within our power to control. We can choose to see the positive side effects of the admittedly worrisome and discouraging external circumstances. For example, I have loved the slower pace of life that allows me more freedom with my exercise. I have been able to spend more time and energy on strength training and try different workouts.

Regardless of how you would have answered the question, “Why do I run?” six weeks, six months, or six years ago, you now have the opportunity to reevaluate and add to that list of motivations. Make the decision to commit to your health and well being by continuing to run just for you. The benefits for your mental and physical health will be well worth making the effort.

What are some of your motivations? What things are you learning through this pandemic about your reasons you run? We would love to hear from you about this. Please email or message us on social media.
